FAQs

WHAT ARE TERPENES?

Terpenes are naturally occurring aromatic compounds found in a variety of plants, including medical cannabis. They are responsible for the distinctive scents and flavours associated with these plants and serve various functions in nature, such as deterring herbivores, attracting pollinators, and protecting against pathogens. Terpenes are also believed to interact with cannabinoids like THC and CBD, contributing to the entourage effect and potentially influencing the therapeutic effects of cannabis.

WHERE DO TERPENES COME FROM?

Terpenes are organic compounds that originate from a variety of natural sources in the plant kingdom. These include fruits, vegetables, herbs, and trees. In the context of medical cannabis, terpenes are synthesized and stored in the trichomes, which are tiny, resinous glands found on the plant's surface. These trichomes contain a rich blend of cannabinoids and terpenes, which collectively contribute to the plant's aroma, flavour, and potential therapeutic effects. Terpenes are not limited to cannabis; they are present in countless plant species, each with its unique combination of terpenes that define its scent and potential uses.

WHAT ARE TERPENES USED FOR?

Terpenes, derived from natural sources like plants and fruits, have a wide range of applications. They are primarily used for their aromatic qualities and potential therapeutic benefits. Terpenes are commonly used in aromatherapy, where their distinct scents are believed to promote relaxation, alleviate stress, and enhance mood. They also find use in the fragrance industry, contributing unique notes and complexity to scents. In the medical cannabis industry, terpenes are often added to products to enhance the flavour and aroma, and they may interact with cannabinoids for potential therapeutic effects. Additionally, terpenes are used in cosmetics and the food and beverage industry to create specific scents, flavours, and potentially offer various benefits.

ARE TERPENES PSYCHOACTIVE?

No, terpenes themselves are not psychoactive substances. They do not induce the direct mind-altering effects associated with psychoactive compounds. However, terpenes can indirectly impact the overall experience of medicating with cannabis due to their potential interaction with cannabinoids, a phenomenon known as the "entourage effect."

WHAT IS THE ENTOURAGE EFFECT?

The entourage effect is a concept in the field of medical cannabis and cannabinoid research that suggests that the combination of various compounds found in the cannabis plant, including cannabinoids (such as THC and CBD) and terpenes, work together synergistically to produce enhanced therapeutic effects or modulate the overall experience of medical cannabis consumption. It is believed that these compounds, when taken together, can have a more profound impact than when each compound is used in isolation.

ARE TERPIES OILS?

Terpene blends are not typically referred to as "oils" but rather as concentrated liquid mixtures or solutions. Terpene blends consist of a combination of various terpenes extracted from natural sources like plants and fruits. These terpenes are often mixed to create specific aromas, flavours, or therapeutic profiles. While terpene blends are liquid in form, they are not necessarily classified as oils in the same way that essential oils or carrier oils are. Terpenes are highly concentrated and should be diluted before use in various applications, including aromatherapy, flavour enhancement, or in cannabis and hemp products. They are usually sold in small bottles with dropper caps for precise measurement and dilution.

WHO SHOULDN’T USE TERPENES?

Individuals who should exercise caution or avoid using terpenes include pregnant or nursing women due to limited research on their effects during pregnancy or breastfeeding, children who may be more sensitive to certain terpenes (keep terpenes out of their reach), and individuals with known allergies to specific terpenes or plants, as terpenes can trigger allergic reactions in some cases. If you have underlying health conditions, especially respiratory issues or medication interactions, consult a healthcare professional before using terpenes. Additionally, ensure that pets are not exposed to terpenes, as some animals can be sensitive to aromatic compounds, and ingestion of concentrated terpenes can be harmful to them. Always prioritize safety and consider individual sensitivities when using terpenes.

DO TERPIES WORK THE SAME WAY AS NATURALLY SOURCED TERPENES PRESENT IN MEDICAL CANNABIS?

Naturally sourced terpenes in medical cannabis are often referred to as "cannabis-derived terpenes" or "strain-specific terpenes." These terpenes are typically extracted directly from cannabis plants. The terpenes in Terpies are obtained from other natural sources and are often referred to as "botanical terpenes" These can offer a broader range of aromatic options and can be blended to reflect common medical cannabis strains, but ultimately they are chemically identical when isolated. Since Terpies are not extracted from medical cannabis, they are 100% THC and CBD free.

HOW LONG WOULD A BOTTLE LAST?

Each bottle has 100 serves, measured as 0.05ml per drop. As an example, if this is added to a tincture daily, one bottle of Terpies should last at least 3 months (1 drop per 1ml of tincture, daily)

IS IT SAFE TO ADD TERPIES TO VAPORISERS?

Terpies have not been evaluated for safe use in e-cigarettes or any vaping application where the product is vaporized and inhaled.

CAN I ADD TERPIES TO MY PRESCRIBED CBD OIL?

Yes you can, adding Terpies at a 1-3% ratio is a great way to enhance your medicating experience. We recommend decanting your dosage into a vial, then adding Terpies from there, about 1 drop per 1ml. It’s advised not to add Terpies directly into your prescription bottle to avoid the chance of adding too much and ruining your prescription. Always start lower than expected, each drop is highly potent and you really will need less than you think!

DO YOU HAVE TO BE OVER 18?

Yes, Terpies are intended for those 18 years and over.

CAN YOU COOK WITH TERPIES?

You sure can! Terpies are fantastic in things like icings for cakes and cookies, added to salad dressings or even used in cocktails! Check out our range of recipes here.

ARE TERPIES VEGAN, GLUTEN FREE OR SUGAR FREE?

All Terpies are botanically derived and do not contain any sweeteners, gluten, or animal products.
